What is 317L?

317L austenitic stainless steel is a low-carbon, molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel. It is alloyed with higher levels of chromium, nickel, and molybdenum to enhance its corrosion resistance and resistance to chemical attack from substances such as sulfurous acid, acetic acid, formic acid, citric acid, and tartaric acid.

It is also known as UNS S31726 / W.Nr. 1.4438 stainless steel.

It exhibits stronger chemical corrosion resistance than conventional chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels such as Alloy 304.

Compared with other stainless steels, Grade 317L austenitic stainless steel offers good seawater corrosion resistance and stress corrosion cracking resistance.
